Whether you’re planning a special break, a romantic interlude or just an extraordinary family break the Maldives is certainly the destination for a holiday of a lifetime.
If you doubted that paradise existed you’ve never visited this beautiful Maldivian retreat.
Recently I visited Halaveli one of the many Maldivian islands, which was transformed and reopened in April 2009 by the Constance group and now, provides the exquisite island retreat of the Constance Halaveli Resort.
Our journey began on an overnight flight from Birmingham airport via Dubai to Male. We were met and swiftly escorted to the resorts private lounge to await our transfer, the 20 minute journey by sea plane to our very own Robinson Crusoe Island, with a very 21st century touch of luxury.
It sits floating in the North Ari atoll, shaped like a curved Dhoni (Maldivian Boat), a theme very much apparent throughout the island. The Five star Halaveli resort is a place where time seems to have stopped and dreams really do become reality, it’s certainly a place to relax and regenerate in over-whelming peacefulness.
The island has one of the longest jetties in the Maldives, elegantly standing over a remarkably tempting turquoise lagoon.
Here you can find the 57 water villas, all offering outstanding privacy and comfort. The villas are creatively designed with high ceilings that represent the shape of the Dhoni. They are spacious and furnished to a very high standard; all have flat screen TV, wifi and apple Mac computer technology. The bathrooms are stunning with freestanding bathtubs virtually on the deck so after a very hard day you can soak in luxurious bath oils watching the sunset over the lagoon. I told you paradise does really exist!! The outside space is as breathtaking; you have your own secluded sundeck which leads onto an infinity plunge pool dropping off into the azure waters of the Indian Ocean. Steps lead down into the water where you can swim with an array of tropical fish.
The beach villas in comparison, of which there are 28 in all, are dotted around the island with beachfront location. They are shielded by tropical gardens which offer immense privacy. To the front there’s a quiet retreat for morning breakfast or evening in villa dining. To the rear, the villas have large open air bathrooms with sunken bathtubs and rainforest showers, The 8 double storey villas are ideal for families.
Once you’ve stepped out of you villa, you may ask, what now?
Well for me the culinary experience was among one of the highlights of the trip. Admittedly a bit of a foodie I was utterly amazed by the variety and standard of the gastronomic delights that were set in front of me at every opportunity. Too many fresh fruits to recognise or remember, fish of every variety freshly caught from the local waters, homemade breads, cakes and puddings to die for, meats so succulent and tender, the list is really endless; and if you didn’t see what you wanted one of the many top chefs would be honoured to prepare your favourite dish. I’ve never been so spoilt in all my life!!
There is a choice of three restaurants, JAHAZ, the main dining area which is primarily self service, with an exceptional array of divinely delicious international cuisine. Alternatively you can dine alfresco at the MEERU beach grill, a stunning setting for sundowners. The third option JING, a breathtaking overwater restaurant which features speciality fusion food where East really does meet West.
To compliment each meal there’s an extensive wine list which takes an enchanting “journey” around the worlds wine lands. To help or guide you is one of the three Sommelier’s, whose knowledge is exceptional. A guided tour around one of the 2 wine cellars is a must, a wine dinner can also be organised.
For those looking for something other than relaxing in a private poolside Cabana or beachside lounger, there’s an array of water sports to choose from. Whether it’s just snorkelling around the coral reef independently or joining one of the organised sessions the choice is yours. For the more adventurous or experienced you can dive to see the rich diversity of marine life, in which is said to be one of the three best dive sites in the Maldives. Other activities include sailing, windsurfing, canoeing, water-skiing, there’s even a fishing trips where you can bring home your supper.
The air conditioned fully equipped gym looked inviting especially after one too many deserts, but I have to admit the short walk around the island was usually enough for the feeling to pass!
For those who choose to do nothing at all will love the sumptuous Island Spa which provides the ultimate place to be pampered. It offers an extensive range of treatments located in over water treatment rooms. Did I hear the words “paradise” mentioned again?
From the moment you were greeted at Male airport till that last parting handshake and smile from the friendliest people I have ever had the pleasure of meeting, I have to say that I have never experienced such sumptuous luxury, relaxation, culinary delight and overwhelming feeling of peace.
I have no doubt that the thoughts of glancing at the sunset when taking your evening shower, snorkelling with sharks at the tip of your deck, and eating some of the most delicious food I have ever tasted will alone ensure a souvenir for life.
